And The Winner Is . . .

From the bean of Green Bean.

Sources say that the President Elect is set to name the next Secretary of Agriculture and it will most decidedly not be Michael Pollan. Nor anyone on the petition that Michael Pollan and his Slow Food buddies circulated. Rather, Mr. Obama will be naming Monsanto friend, Tom Vilsack, for Secretary of Agriculture.

If there is one thing that we learned from Mr. Obama's election, though, it is how to organize. How to harness the power of the Internet, blogs, Facebook, Twitter to make connections, spread the word, and be heard. Mr. Vilsack may be our next head farmer but he'll be an aware one. He'll get an earful about organic farming, non-GMO policies, regional food chains, reduced subsidies for commodity crops and much much more. He'll get suggestions on who to appoint for various USDA positions. He'll get petitions, like this one (please consider signing it).

And, maybe, just maybe a sustainable agriculture will still be born.

But we still have our vote for a sustainable food system each time we lay down a dollar to buy what we eat! And more people all the time are paying attention to that and spending wisely. I'm bummed the choice for Ag Secretary wasn't different but I remain hopeful.

That's hugely disappointing to me. It's hard to imagine that Vilsack does not protect the corn status quo. Sigh.
